Textbook Adoption Requests: Why They Are Needed Months in Advance
The adoption schedule was made with the following benefits in mind: For the bookstore, it ensures a realistic time frame for editing, planning, and purchasing used textbooks before new textbooks. It also allows the bookstore to identify special problems and new text editions.
For the faculty, it ensures sufficient lead-time to accommodate publishing delays, adjustments for new editions, searches from other sources, and correction of errors.
For the student, it ensures that the bookstore will be able to pay top dollar for used textbooks at book buyback. It also gives the student a larger selection of used books to choose from.
Instructions for Submitting Textbook Adoption Requests
The bookstore will send adoption forms to each departmental secretary approximately one month prior to the due date.
- Fill out each form completely, including title, author, publisher, and ISBN. Indicate whether the texts will be required or optional. If you will not be using a text for your course, please indicate this on the form.
- Remember to include an estimated enrollment figure. Be realistic with this figure. Many publishers claim that there is a direct relationship between the high cost of handling excess books that are returned by bookstores and the high price of textbooks. If you are ordering for multiple sections of a course, please indicate that on the requisition, for example 30 copies for each section.
- If you use a custom course packet, please indicate this on the form and make sure that the bookstore receives your master copy at least four weeks before the semester begins. This ensures that we will have ample time to process the packets.
- The completed forms should then be returned to the bookstore via campus mail, or by faxing to 783-5008.

How We Determine the Number of Textbooks to Order
We strive to have, at minimum, enough books for everyone who wants one, at Rush. To achieve this goal, we carefully review all the information we have available to us. This includes the quantity you want, the sales history of both the book and the course, and pre-enrollment figures. We do not adjust the quantity you request arbitrarily. Our thorough examination process is used to determine the number of books that will fulfill the needs of every student who wishes to buy the book. At the same time, we strive to reduce the number of excess books sent back to the publishers. Publishers assert that there is a direct relationship between the high costs of handling excess books (returns) and high priced textbooks. By trying to have at least enough books for everyone who wants one, without tremendous excess, we hope to help publishers curb the steep rise in textbook prices.

A student's first experience buying books is usually as a college freshman, and the cost of these texts is staggering. By giving your textbook adoption requests careful consideration as to the actual need and use of each text, you can help counter the negative attitude towards book purchases. Unsold textbooks create double transportation charges, monetary loss from non-returnable titles, and wasted overhead spent in the time ordering, receiving, and processing the return of unsold texts.
